What is the difference between gold plated, vermeil and gold filled? Gold plated is a base metal that is submerged in an electroplating solution. This produces a thin layer of gold and can wear off. Vermeil is sterling silver that is gold plated. Gold filled is one of the nicer alternatives to solid gold. It is a base metal with sheets of gold in a mechanical bonding process. It produces a thicker layer of gold that can last as long as 14k gold. The thick coating is usually 5% or 1/20 of the total weight of the item. Gold filled items usually have a soft gold look while vermeil and gold plated items usually have a brassier look.
