What is the difference between split ring and jump rings? Jump rings are one piece of wire wound into a circle. They can be soldered closed or open (with a split so that you can twist it apart to hook it on something, then twist it closed). Split rings look like tiny key rings. They have two loops of silver. You hook your piece between the two silver wires and slide it around until it is on both rings. Split rings are obviously safer, however, when using sterling silver ones, they can become permanently apart and will tend to snag. Jump rings are easier to use.

These rings are measured from outside to outside diameter.
